Cali Roadtrip

At the end of May, I took a trip out to Cali to lock in a job teaching surfing in Santa Monica. I had some time to kill so my friend Jordan and I went camping in Yosemite, hit up Mammoth for closing weekend and surfed the shores of Malibu. It was a pretty epic week and I rarely ever use that word so you know I mean it when I do.

I was mostly surprised and impressed with Mammoth. Hands down one of the greatest little towns in the US. Huge mountain, decent restaurants, awesome skate park, and plenty of camping. The only thing I felt we missed out on were the hot springs which are apparently pretty abundant. Next time.

Here’s a few shots from the journey.

Brighton and Then Some

As the season was winding down there were a couple days I sure want to note. One in particular was a day that started off with some sunny pow with friends and ended up with a solo stormy sketch hike that turned into one of those gratifying moments I’ll never forget. With laps in between at Brighton I was able to hit Clayton’s, Pioneer and Sunset Peaks all in a day.

Clayton’s was sunny. Pioneer an hour later was a blizzard. And then I dropped, The sun sneaked through and I got my last glory turns for the year. Oh I forgot to mention the baby moose. He’s in the video…

Ski Utah in 6 Days

Earlier this winter I was contacted by a good friend to help with a project for Ski Utah. The plan was to shoot some commercials for their Internet advertising and the set date was the first week of April. April can be hit or miss for good snow especially if you want to show the “best snow on earth” to the rest of the global Internet community.

The first day we started shooting we got a few inches of snow in the mountains were pretty socked in. The next day it rained. Odds of getting decent shots were pretty dismal. We only had a few more days to shoot all of these resorts in the Ogden, Park City and Cottonwood Canyons. Yet there was a gleam of hope with a few inches of snow predicted for the next few days. Forecasts had been between 3 to 6 inches and up to 20. We didn’t know what to expect but we just kept our fingers crossed.

We got the snow and we got the shots. Thank you Utah!

And thank you to these individuals who helped make it all happen.

Grand Targhee with 4FRNT Media

Two years ago I had a chance to get up to Grand Targhee on the border of Idaho and Wyoming. It had snowed over 2 feet the day prior and was crystal clear blue skies over the weekend when I was there. Shit was sick.

When I heard that my friends at 4FRNT skis we’re heading up there to shoot for next year’s movie, this was an opportunity I could not miss. On day one conditions were pretty much the same as the last time I was there. Fresh snow and plenty of blue sky. This time around we had a crew of a half-dozen and a cameraman to capture the action. The team consisted of Austin Ramaley, Thayne Rich, Max Mackenzie, Gary McKenzie, Nick Greener, Cody Barnhill and myself. Shit went off.

Mad props to Thayne for throwing down some of the biggest tricks off cliffs I’ve seen with my own eyes. He was easily taking some 720s and flat spins 50 to 60 feet deep. Nick crushed an air to straight line double and Gary sent a pretty diesel sized air as well. Cody always getting extra sideways on his 3 and then we capped the day with a hot tub session and watched the full moon rise over the Grand Teton.

Day two we ventured out on snowmobiles into the backcountry. The mountains had gotten socked in with clouds and light snow so pillow lines were ideal. We found a couple of great untouched shots after about an hour or two getting higher in the Alpine. It wasn’t exactly perfect but still a ton of fun. Big shout out to Max and Gary for showing us around and giving us a place to crash. Thanks again

Jackson is That Place

That place.

Jackson is that place you want to be when you think of winter, mountains, snow, beer, music, and friends. They pretty much have everything except women. Which is probably a good thing because there so much else to do anyways, who needs the distraction!?

Anyways, finally had some ambition to get up there a bunch this season. At only a four and half hour drive from Salt Lake City it’s a shame I hadn’t been doing this more often. Hope you enjoy the pics from the adventure!

The Night it Snowed … Really Hard.

December 2012 proved to be a great month to start the winter in terms of snowfall. With 196 inches of snow fallen at Alta before January 1st, things appeared just about on par with yet another epic Utah winter. Unfortunately Ullr had other plans from then on out. We really didn’t see much in terms of storm cycles for quite some time. 3 to 6 inch storms were pretty much the norm for January and February. What a tease…

It has been a fairly calm storm day on February 22. Enough new snow for fun conditions but still not a serious powder day. Friends and cohorts were inside downing pints of beer and munching on on slices of pepperoni when things started to turn furious outside the window. The wind picked up in the snow started coming. I dialed in a few more laps on the Wildcat chair with my friend Sam from New Zealand as we decided we would let the traffic make its way down the canyon.

Après-ski then began.

This would be the après-ski I would never forget. Generally traffic dies down by 5 or 6 PM and it’s smooth sailing back to the valley. We had crushed about three pitchers by 8 o’clock and cars still hadn’t left the parking lot. It was really snowing. The visibility must have been 20 or 30 feet. There was glow outside in the darkness from the red lights lined up trying to exit the lot. Faces were plastered against the window trying to discern whether or not the cars were actually moving. One group of my friends actually went into their car for an hour, turned it on, never left the lot and decided to come back in and drink some more beer. Unfortunately others had the same plan and even the kitchen ran out of food, it was down to PBJ’s and french fries. This is really great fuel for the following day which turned to be one of the best pow days I’ve ever had Alta. We finally left and made it home by 11 PM so rest wasn’t a concern for the shred to come.

Roadside Attractions

When I quit my job this winter it turns out a friend of mine named Kyle also had some free time on his hands. Kyle has done a bunch of film work in the past so we teamed up together to shoot a bunch of features after a storm in early February. What was originally supposed to be just a small pillow line shoot Alongside the road in big Cottonwood turned out to be a full day of event slaying some of the most prominent features I have been eyeing over the last few years.

The larger hit which consisted of a carving right hundred foot in run, a short take off to a 20 foot drop over some scraggly bushes to completely flat got the best of me. I came to my feet but just didn’t have the speed to power through the flat deep landing. After two failed attempts my shins felt nearly broken in my boot so I called it. Which was a good idea because I had pretty much the worst shin-bang for almost two weeks following.

In the end, these roadside features and this shoot was one of my favorite days of the season. Thanks Kyle!

Get Beyond the Gates

My number one mission this season was to go outside the gates and ski the backcountry. I have spent so much time inbounds at Brighton and Alta ski resorts in Utah but never really ventured to the great peaks in between. Areas like the Wolverine cirque, Mount Superior and Rocky Point are all easy access classics and within an hour or two hike from the parking lot. These short adventures are nothing new to my friends in Utah but hopefully for everyone else this shows how great it is to have such a paradise in your backyard.

And so dreams take shape…

January 30th, 2013. I walked out.

A few months prior I had decided my desk job just wasn’t cutting it. There was little unpredictability, little adventure, a small amount of free time and a ton of emails. Not that I had a horrible job. In the realm of possible careers, being a software salesperson was not a bad gig. There were clients to appease but in the world of technology, many are less savvy and being an “expert” sure has its upsides. I enjoyed taking my time to deliver valuable information to assist clients. Sometimes that delay, that laziness on my part would actually turn a problem into urgency creating a sale which in turn fattened my wallet and the companies. Crazy world this is. The big problem was that I just didn’t care. Didn’t care about the technology, the job or the money. I must have spent 80% of my paid salary time visualizing what I’d rather be doing. That was skiing.

The way I see it, there are dreams, visualization, action, and reality. Skiing had always been something I had been immensely obsessed with since I was 13. Large amounts of my life were spent watching ski movies, training to go skiing, and learning how I can become a professional skier. The idea consumed me.  While I pursued college and a career, I never let go of that idea. I always trained harder and harder. I raced in triathlons to stay in shape and had a trampoline on my front lawn in the center of the college campus. Every stride and bounce was one step closer to skiing.

Six years later.

Tired of excuses. Tired of trying to please everyone. Tired of not having done what I always believed I would do. Life sure gives you silly reasons to be someone you’re not. My mom always says “it’s a process” and she sure couldn’t be more right. I tend to think every decision we make is very conscious one evaluating the pros and cons, short and long term outcomes, at least with the given knowledge we already have. I guess it just took me a little longer to put it all together and make my dream a reality… and I always say “better late than never.”

This winter has been an eye opener for me. I’ve spent a few weeks behind the lens of a camera and traveling to new places in the Utah backcountry and up in Jackson, WY. I’m looking forward to more spring adventures to California and Whistler, BC. Skiing is the culumnation of my three passions in life, fitness, the outdoors, and traveling. The more I ski, the more I can participate in what I love. I hope my stories inspire others to gravitate towards their passions.

Watching the powder days slip by no more.

No more watching the powder days slip by.
